John G. Topham Jr. Spirit Fund












This fund was created to remember and keep the spirit of John G. Topham Jr. and his love of the Nantucket community alive.

The Mission: To award and recognize annually a youth member demonstrating peer leadership and a passion for the fight and prevention of HIV and AIDS in the Nantucket community. And to provide sponsorship and/or financial support for community individuals participating in National and International HIV and AIDS work focusing on education, prevention or care.

The Spirit Award will be presented annually at the Nantucket AIDS Network’s Friendship Gala and Auction. Nominations can be submitted in writing by any member of the Nantucket community. Recipients of this award will be decided on by the Spirit panel.

Criteria for the Spirit Award are:

  • Good standing member of PPAA

  • Demonstrates a passion for a cause that is larger than themselves

  • Committed to a dream or vision that will better society

  • Have values that are in respect for others and life-giving to society

  • Shows creativity and intellectual drive

  • Good listener

  • Honest and open communicator

  • Can get a job done, through team work

  • Demonstrates the personal qualities of passion, humor, strength of character, maturity, patience, wisdom, trustworthiness, reliability, creativity and sensitivity

Deadline is November 1, 2004

Criteria and financial breakdown for the Spirit Fund are:

  • Annually $500 to be awarded to Nantucket individuals supporting their fund-raising efforts participating in Walks, Runs, Bike Rides around the country.

  • Annually $1500 will be awarded to individuals who request funds for supporting national and international volunteer work efforts focusing on education, prevention or care.

  • Those awarded the money must complete the application process and their projects be affiliated with another AIDS Service Organization.

  • The committee will review the individual’s commitment and quality of the application to determine if funding is awarded.
